The inaugural Star Supa Comic event is gearing up for an epic cosplay weekend. It will take place at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 29 and 30.

There will be a wide array of anime, manga and comics cosplayers taking part in this gathering of tribes.

One cosplay band that is set to light up the stage during the event is Deltarhythm.

It all started two years ago when KL-based cosplayer Ristelle came across the song Ikenai Borderline, more famously known as Giri Giri Ai. She loved it immediately but didnt know who sang it.

She went on a hunt to find out where this song originated from.

This search led her to the Macross Delta anime series, which features a group of five idols, who use the power of their music to soothe the inhabitants of Brisingr Globular Cluster, where many are infected with the Vár Syndrome that makes people go beserk.

“It immediately sparked an interest in me to form a group of my own. So I started inviting friends who love anime and share the same passion for singing and dancing. And that’s how Deltarhythm was formed,” says Ristelle, who started cosplaying in 2011.

The cosplay band Deltarhythm’s line-up includes Ristelle, Cili, Kanami, NoName and Rina. They only want to be known by their stage names. Deltarhythm debuted in AniManGaki in KL in 2016, covering tracks from the Macross Delta soundtrack.

“It isn’t always easy for all of us to gather for (band) practices since one of our members is from Singapore! However, that has never stopped us from sharing our passion and love (for anime) with everyone,” says Ristelle.

Her favourite cosplay character is Hana from the manga series Prison School.

As a band, Deltarhythm has also performed at Aikon 2017 and Comic Fiesta Mini Penang 2018. The band has also divided its line-up to suit different live performances, which feature selected members and collaborations. There’s the Deltarhythm Trio, which performed at the Anime Carnival (2017) and NICE Expo (2017), Deltarhythm featuring 5FT5 at the Melaka Anime Festival (2018) and also Delta:Alter, which performed at Cosmart 2017 and 2018.

On average, the girls spend between RM100 and RM450 on the costume supplies and materials, including dresses, wigs and ... of course, glitter.

Interestingly, group member NoName had no idea what cosplay was all about.

“After I was exposed to the cosplay community, I never looked back. It’s an exciting hobby, you just get so hooked,” says NoName, who has cosplayed nearly 50 characters since she began in 2014.
