Malaysia has had a busy cosplay scene going on for a while now, beginning way back in the early 2000s with small gatherings organised by enthusiastic college students.
The early days saw people – mostly teens – dress up as their favourite characters from Japanese manga books and anime TV series. As anime grew in popularity and more Japanese TV began to be aired locally, cosplay grew in tandem, and professionally organised events soon became the norm.
