Besides spending quality time with family, Raya is all about looking your best. It does not hurt to celebrate in style, and dressing up can certainly help make the occasion memorable.

Fashion trends for the season are seeing a rise of classic cuts and silhouettes, but with the overt addition of statement embellishments. Fun colours add an air of festivity, as well.

Here we highlight the collections of eight local designer labels worth checking out for your Aidilfitri dress-up.

Beauty In Diversity

The beauty of Malaysia’s melting pot of people and culture inspires the Innai Red designs. A harmonious existence of opposites is reflected in a fashionable showcase of new meets old. The campaign imagery brings to life the essence of unity by highlighting three well-known personalities of different backgrounds: social activist Deborah Henry, actress Diana Danielle and television personality Sarah Lian.

Bernard Chandran.
Melinda Looi.

Masculine Femininity

In the spirit of Raya, Melinda Looi gives a new spin to the kain pelikat by using it as a print. The result is a feminine look and feel, which is a beautiful blend of tradition and “something new”. Trendy embellishments include intricate bead work and lace detailing as well as Swarovski crystals, alongside pleated ruffles, feather embellishment and embroidery work.

Vintage Touch

Bernard Chandran’s collection is a luminous array of rich colours and textures at play. Strikingly glamorous, it draws inspiration from the glossy and glitzy 1970s Parisian nights. Kebayas are seen in a number of vintage overtures including the pant-skirt style, free-spirited kaftan, and playful jump-suit with overlay, designed using a variety of techniques like pleating, ribbing and weaving.

Alia Bastamam.
Joshua Fitton.

Classic With A Twist

Joshua Fitton’s very first Raya collection offers eight ready-to-wear and four bespoke looks, with a variety of silhouettes, dominated by geometrical cuts and mermaid skirts. The looks comprise complimenting styles for both men and women, with the aim of emphasising a sense of unity within a modern couple. Timeless prints such as stripes and checks are also a highlight.

Touch Of Whimsy

The Alia Bastamam woman finds new horizons this Raya season, where blossoming botanicals meet sparkling stars and modern lines pair effortlessly with subdued glamour.

Fairytale necklines on a baju kurung and exaggerated button details on a jubah provide elements of delight. As is the full-pink kurta remix, made of a draped top and flared disco pants.

Khoon Hooi.
Mimpi Kita.

Modern Tradition

For Raya 2018, Khoon Hooi pays homage towards the kebaya pieces found in the closet of his grandmother. The classic design is transformed and appears in various styles and silhouettes. Incorporating elements of the baju kurung and kaftan – with detailing such as draping, scallop edges and floral embroidery, the collection features a mix of materials such as satin, silk taffeta and jacquard.

Time To Celebrate

Mimpikita’s collection brings about the joyous and festive mood of Aidilfitri. It features sweet pastels, in addition to cheerful colours such fuchsia, yellow and turquoise. The pieces incorporate the brand’s signature in-house designed prints such as Petra (geometrics) and Scilla (florals), which help enhance the beauty of the soft and flowy fabrics used.

Making A Statement

While it is inspired by the women of the pre-French revolution era circa 1780s, the Fiziwoo ready-to-wear Aidilfitri collection nevertheless, shines a spotlight on modern femininity. It adheres to a classic baju kurung silhoutte, but with the addition of chic design elements. Asymmetrical peplums, bell sleeves and statement folds denote an absolutely trendy feel.
