Pope Francis' teachings on the devastation of the environment by business interests is awaited with great interest in Peru by Andean and Amazonian communities and other defenders of the environment.

This issue is the main reason for the social conflicts that have recurrently resulted in violence and death and is particularly serious in Madre de Dios, a region in the southern Amazon forest (In Spanish, madre de dios means Mother of God, the Catholic title for Mary, the mother of Jesus).
