Health services scramble to cope in Vegas shooting

Shooting victim Paola Bautista, right, of Fontana, Calif., with her sister Daisy, recounts her experience of running and hiding once they heard gunshots while attending the country music festival the night 59 people were killed and 527 injured, from her hospital bed at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017. Bautista was shot in the forearm and will require additional surgeries.

The chatter from a police radio instantly caught the attention of Kevin Menes, the senior doctor on duty on Oct 1, 2017, at one of the busiest emergency rooms in Las Vegas, United States: “Automatic fire.” “Look for the shooter.”

As more information came in – country music concert, Mandalay Bay on the Strip – his mind started spinning. Dr Menes had rehearsed this scenario in his head. Four ER (emergency room) doctors and one trauma surgeon were on duty that night at Sunrise Medical Center.
