Writer and director George Lucas released the first Star Wars movie in May 1977 to unexpected box-office success, launching a mega-sci-fi franchise and merchandising empire that continues to excite millions of adoring fans today.

Its largest 40th anniversary event took place in April with over 70,000 fans attending Star Wars Celebration Orlando, an annual convention by franchise owner Lucasfilm, part of The Walt Disney Company since 2012.
