“It is just a straightforward procedure,” I told myself as I headed towards the clinic door. “All they’ll do is take your breasts and squeeze them between two metal plates, take photographs of them, and then send you on your way. The usual Friday afternoon stuff.

As I filled out the paperwork in the reception area, I began to feel slightly nervous. “Most women probably feel the same the first time they have to go for a mammogram,” I reminded myself.
