Quick question: What do the Canadian prime minister, a One Direction member and Deadpool have in common?
Answer: They are all in the list of GQ magazine’s “most stylish men in the world”.
Swoon – or snicker if you must – but Justin Trudeau, Harry Styles and Ryan Reynolds (who played the foul-mouthed comic character) are among the 13 who cracked the annual list of most stylish men.
“We speak of men who look as sharp on the street as they do on the red carpet,” enthused the men’s glossy. “Who realise that, in the camera-phone age, every little walk to the corner can turn into a photo op. And who rarely bother with suits – but when they do, they really make it count.”
Categories bestowed include “The 007 Of Style”, “The Natural”, “The Coziest Baller”, “The Sartorial Daredevil” and “The Minimalist”.
So who won what, and are they deserving of that accolade? Let’s decode eight of the choices:
Idris Elba, 43, “The 007 Of Style”
Who’s he? British actor who received wide acclaim for Beasts Of No Nation, but alas, no Oscar nomination.
What GQ said: “We’re not sure if Idris is really campaigning to be the next James Bond, but he’s sure dressing the part.”
What we say: This alpha male movie star – a firm favourite of Star2 senior editor Ann Marie Chandy – relishes the opportunity to turn up in black tie. And looks as suave as a super spy.
Eddie Redmayne, 34, “The Natural”
Who’s he? British model and actor, who won an Academy Award for The Theory Of Everything.
What GQ said: “Dressing casually is actually harder. Doing it well requires a sixth sense ... The guy looks turned out even if he’s just running to get the paper.”
What we say: It helps that he had modelling background; he was featured in a Burberry campaign in 2008. At the moment, red-hot Redmayne can do no wrong.
Drake, 29, “The Coziest Baller”
Who’s he? Grammy-winning Canadian rapper, who has set several Billboard chart records.
What GQ said: “For a certain type of rich guy, luxury means comfort ... Drake plays this look to the hilt.”
What we say: Kanye West better watch his back.
Harry Styles, 22, “The Prince Of Prints”
Who’s he? A member of the world’s biggest boy band, One Direction.
What GQ said: “Untuck that Hawaiian shirt, maybe roll up your sleeves. Walk out of the house with bedhead hair....”
What we say: At the risk of incurring the wrath of Directioners, we’re not singing praises of Styles’ non-existent style.
Ryan Reynolds, 39, “The Double Taker”
Who’s he? Actor who found critical and commercial success this year with Deadpool. A sequel is already in the works.
What GQ said: “He always twists the classics just enough to keep them interesting.”
What we say: Talented, funny and a dapper dresser. Blake Lively is one lucky woman.
Justin Trudeau, 44, “The Prime Minister Of Suave”
Who’s he? The 23rd prime minister of Canada who assumed office last November.
What GQ said: “He is at least vaguely aware of how a suit should fit. Admitedly a low bar, but one rarely cleared by world leaders.”
What we say: He has an edgy tattoo and likes boxing! And he rocks an IWC Regulateur timepiece on his left wrist. Politics has never looked this fine.
Lucky Blue Smith, 17, “The Genetic Sweepstakes Winner”
Who’s he? The youngest on the list, he’s a model with platinum blond hair who became insta-famous on Instagram.
What GQ said: “Yes, it helps to have his genes. But it also helps to have his jeans – and his leathers, and his tees. For Lucky, personal style is rock ‘n’ roll simple.”
What we say: Many in the fashion industry acknowledge that Smith’s popularity on social media is a deciding factor for brands and editors who hire him. In this case, the Internet is to be blamed.
Tom Hardy, 38, “The Misleading Man”
Who’s he? The leading man of Mad Max: Fury Road is described as the least vain actor in Hollywood.
What GQ said: “Out of costume, he’s a total rake who wrings every drop of mojo out of a three-piece Gucci suit.”
What we say: His unruly grooming is often at contrast with his impeccable suits, but somehow it works.
Other “winners” in the list include Diplo (“The Globe-Trotter”), Odell Beckham Jr (“The Body Artist”), Future (“The Lord Of The Brim”), Russell Westbrook (“The Sartorial Devil”) and Aziz Ansari (“The Minimalist”).
William likes to buy glossies but wishes they weren’t so darn expensive.
