A year ago, an abandoned apartment building sat crumbling on Edgerton Road in the city’s Highland Square neighbourhood in Akron, Ohio. Now the site is home to a thriving community garden and neighbourhood gathering spot, and the man behind the transformation is the recipient of a national award.

Andrew Lucas, the organiser of Edgerton Community Garden, is one of 10 recipients of the Good Neighbour Award from the social media site Nextdoor. His roommate, Eric Napholz, nominated him for the honour, which recognises people who give back to their communities.
