Vasthu doctrine says we must live in agreement with the cosmic forces to enjoy bliss.

The idea that ancient sciences and Vasthu Sastra are effective data that offer hope to the people received international recognition from the India-based International Friendship Society (IFS) this month.

IFS conferred on me two prestigious awards – the Glory of India Award and a Certificate of Excellence, and the Bharat Gaurav Award in appreciation of my writings and talks on the subject.

Former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Korn Dabbaransi presented me with the Glory of India Award at a ceremony in Bangkok on Jan 15, while former Tamil Nadu and Assam Governor Dr Bhishma Narain Singh bestowed upon me the Bharat Gaurav Award for propagating Vedic wisdom outside India, at a ceremony in New Delhi on Jan 6.

IFS general-secretary Gurmeet Singh said such awards were given to recipients for their outstanding contribution to the progress of the people and the world.

He said among the past recipients of the awards were the late Mother Teresa, former Vice-President of India B.D. Jatti, Bollywood movie star Rajesh Khanna, and cricket star Sunil Gavaskar.

I’m humbled by the honours and I attribute them to the readers and followers of this column who have benefited from the age-old practices.

Vasthu is about being at peace with ourselves, in harmony with the space we occupy, and in accord with the people we come in contact with.

In my two decades of spreading the information found in the scriptures, I am pleased to write that many people have experienced some form of relief and transformation by making changes to their homes, place of work or business.

It is based on the placement of the five elements – ether, air, fire, water and earth – in the correct pro-portions into any enclosure we occupy, and when we are in alignment with these energies, we will enjoy good health, harmony, happiness and abundance.

Why is it vital to live in agreement with the cosmic forces?

We are governed by universal forces or chi (energy) that may not be visible but can be felt.

The earth’s electromagnetic forces are constantly changing, and these fluctuations have an impact on a human being’s mind and body.

Our body and premises vibrate subtle energies and Vasthu says we must be in harmony with these forces to enjoy bliss.

When the layout of a property fosters a flow of energy that supports the occupants, then there will be balance in the dwelling space and those residing there will yield auspicious things.

Vasthu is a result-orientated art of placement and it can be observed by anyone who seeks to attract peaceful energies into his dwelling place.

The best time to follow these values is when designing, building, purchasing, renovating or renting premises because it is easy to comply without demolishing or tearing down walls.

For those facing problems with health, relationships, finances, studies or business, it is highly recommended that you perform a Vasthu audit of the property you are occupying because you will be able to find solutions to your difficulties.

Although it can be challenging to follow Vasthu doctrine 100% in already built homes, its recom-mendations can still be applied to a greater place and people can experience contentment and joy within days.

Its principles are based on energy flow and distribution of elements, and these factors are uniform throughout the world and can be observed by anyone.

It is best to be connected to the energy movement so that it works for our well-being and goodwill.

How can we improve the harmony in an office?

Working in a peaceful environment is important because we spend the prime hours of the day in an office space. Even if the space does not belong to us, we can still observe simple steps like removing clutter and keeping the place tidy to attract the flow of positive energy.

An organised office can help to improve a strong, harmonious relationship between the boss and workers. The reception area, which gives customers the first impression of the company, should be located in the north-east and staff manning the counter should face the entrance.

What are the ideal directions for workers to face in an office?

The direction we face when we work can determine our well-being because a wrong location can result in staff feeling fatigued and restless, or experiencing mental block and becoming hostile.

Facing east gives employees noble and enlightened thoughts; facing south-east induces dullness. Facing south will cause unwanted thoughts. Facing north-west creates thoughts of travel and restlessness. Facing north is favourable for accumulating wealth of knowledge. Facing north-east develops the mood for spirituality and transcendence.

Unfavourable directions are south and south-west, which invite diseases and illness.

What are the benefits of chanting mantras?

The chanting of a mantra serves as a focal point for energy to establish a link between an individual and the cosmos, and its aim is to invoke divine powers. Reciting it uplifts and protects the doer because it is a combination of sounds of words with specific spiritual potential.

The waves of sound released by the repetition of the words unfold these possibilities in the physical body by awakening the power centre in the body. All mantras contain power and deep philosophical meanings, and singing one repeatedly benefits mental, physical and spiritual health.

One of the most ancient and profound Sanskrit mantras, which is known as the Mother of the Vedas, is the Gayatri Mantra and it should be performed at sunrise and sunset for general well-being.

How can we apply the power of visualisation to benefit us?

Our minds are powerful tools and by performing the skill of conception, we will be able to build up the assurance to imagine the success of one’s power.

Although the practice to achieve this takes time, it is a useful exercise to run through it 10 to 15 minutes daily after waking up when you are fresh and alert.

Sit up straight and focus on one subject that you want to achieve on that particular day.

Concentrate and do not allow your mind to drift. Once you have identified the particular task, focus on every detail of the vision. You can perform this exercise with your eyes open or close in a quiet space so that you are not distracted.

The results can be instant sometimes, depending on your strong intent and attention to the subject matter.

How can we remain happy all the time?

We are all born to be happy and it is our birthright to enjoy contentment and bliss. Owing to various external factors and influences in our daily lives, our happiness is often easily robbed.

Cheerfulness cannot be purchased and it should not be confused with pleasure, which is temporary.

As long as we remain unaware of the things we have been blessed with, we cannot be happy.

An exercise to test and stay happy is to wake up daily and make a statement that you would only speak with good purpose and would not utter a single negative word that could bring discontent to anyone.

Once this practice is established successfully, you will remain free from all negativity and have joy constantly.
