The Live Great Run on Sept 15 promises to be a fun and exciting event.

GREAT Eastern Life is organising the Live Great Run, which will take off from Menara Matrade in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 15.

The run will be divided into two categories: a 12km run that will see a slew of hurdles along the racecourse; and a 3km category that will see a pair of participants in a fun run in an “oversized double T-shirt”.

The race is limited to the first 6,000 participants for both categories.

There is a total of RM20,000 in cash prizes to be won.

To be eligible to participate, runners must be aged 16 and above, as of Dec 31, 2013. Registration fee is at RM50 per person for the 12km run, and RM50 per pair for the 3km run. Registration closes on Aug 30.

However, there are a few important things to note before you hop onto the running bandwagon.

For starters, you will first need to determine your foot type before you head out for a pair of running shoes, says Albert Tan Yi Wey, head of the exercise physiology centre at the National Sports Institute of Malaysia.

Essentially, there are three types of feet: the flat-feet, feet with a high arch, and feet with a normal arch. Your foot type will determine the way you run, as well as the type of shoes you should wear to complement your natural running style, Tan explains.

Wearing the right shoes also helps prevent injuries and may help enhance athletic performance.

Another thing that the exercise physiologist says that runners need to focus on is technique.

Emerging research has prompted a switch from the traditional heel-strike method (rearfoot running) to forefoot running in recent years, he says.

Landing on the forefoot during a run helps to mitigate the risk of injury, especially to the knees.

“With forefoot running, contact time with the ground is also less. As a result, you will be able to go faster and you save more energy, compared to the heel-strike,” he says.

As for the Live Great Run, those who have registered can look forward to complimentary running clinics that will be held in Menara Matrade on Sept 1 and Menara Great Eastern on Sept 8.
