When Michael Phelps claimed the gold medals for the 200m butterfly race and the freestyle relays at the recent Rio Olympics with purplish circles all over his shoulders and back, he inadvertently threw Chinese medicine into the global spotlight.

Phelps was not the only Olympian with purplish marks on display. American gymnast Alex Naddour and Belarus swimmer Pavel Sankovich are just two more amongst the many other athletes spotted with these circles.
