Tu Youyou is the first woman to have won the Nobel Prize for medicine in China for extracting an anti-malarial drug from a traditional herb. However, even before collecting the award a debate has sparked.

Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners say that she is Westernising age-old cures, while the Nobel committee wants to be clear that the award is for her work and not the effectiveness of traditional medicine.
