AS part of the campaign to generate greater awareness of better digestive health amongst Malaysians, the Digestive Health Advisory Board (DHAB) organised various roadshows last year, the most recent being the year-end exhibition in Village Mall, Sungai Petani, Kedah (Dec 12-15).

DHAB distributed free stool test kits to the public during the roadshow in Sungai Petani to help detect colorectal cancer.

Healthcare mediators were on duty to teach the public how to use the kits.

According to consultant gastroenterologist Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan, “Colorectal cancer is now the second most frequent cancer among Malaysian men and women.

“In order to raise the awareness of digestive health, we are giving out the stool test kits for the public to see if their stools contain blood. This can be done easily at home.”

“Those who test positive should see their doctor immediately, as this is an alarming situation, because the blood may originate from anywhere along your digestive system,” said Dr Muhammad, also the chairman of DHAB.

During these digestive health roadshows, various health screenings for Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure and body fat were also conducted.

Nutritionists and gastroenterology nurses were on standby to provide advice on healthy eating and digestive health to members of the public.

In addition, various educational materials on digestive health by the panel of experts from DHAB were distributed freely to the public, such as Guard Your Gut Infoguides, Healthy Tummy Healthy Life, Loving What’s Within and the Positive Parenting Digestive Health Booklet.

Another attraction of the roadshows was the “Healthy Digestive Journey”, a physical construct that allowed visitors to travel through a tunnel filled with interactive games and information about the ins and outs of the digestive system.

All three roadshows featured various fun and educational games and activities for the whole family. They included the Vitagen Colouring Contest, Vitagen Gut Defender, Vitagen Smart Challenge, Vitagen Bacteria Battles, Vitagen Photo Booth and Kinect Fitness.

All activities under the World Digestive Health Day roadshows were fully supported by the Vitagen Healthy Digestion Programme.
