I HAVE a pain in the heel of my right foot. It has been there for several years, and it’s worse after I have walked for some distance. I went to a doctor who told me I had a heel spur. What is this?  

A heel spur is a hook or knob of bone that can form on the heel bone (calcaneus). It is associated with plantar fasciitis. About 70% of patients with plantar fasciitis have a heel spur. In fact, many doctors frequently confuse the two!
