THE studies presented are facts with which it is difficult to argue. The interpretation and conclusions to draw from these facts are personal matters, which can vary from person to person. After all, while medicine is a science, the healing of the sick is an art for which a lifetime of education is required. What is presented below is a personal interpretation of the scientific evidence.
It has been less than four years since the first human experiments on stem cell treatment, and worldwide less than 150 patients have been subjected to it. Patients have been followed up for up to a maximum of six months. There has been one double-blind placebo- controlled trial, the highest quality medical trial, which only had 67 patients. Compare this with the evidence we have on the benefit of statin treatment for patients with heart disease. Trials have been reported for over 20 years, studying over 150,000 patients in randomised double blind placebo controlled trials, with the trial period lasting up to five years. Our confidence in the benefit of the statins must surely be far greater than our confidence in the benefit of stem cell treatment.
