IN 1930, M. Manal (founder of Himalaya Drug Company) went for a walk through the forest and discovered some restless elephants that were being fed the root of a plant (Rauwolfia serpentina) to pacify them. He could easily have taken the root and marketed it for its “magic” properties, but he did not.
He conducted tests on the root and discovered that it was able to bring down blood pressure. After extensive research, he developed the root into an anti-hypertensive drug.
