WHAT are generic drugs? When the R&D (research and development) team of a drug company discovers a new entity and makes it into a drug, the innovator company can apply for a patent on the drug, and sometimes on the manufacturing process which protects them for a period of 20 years.
No other drug manufacturer during this period is allowed to produce or sell the same drug product without the patent holder’s approval, thus eliminating direct price competition.
