However, according to consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Mahes Sittampalam, some 15% to 20% of couples do not achieve a pregnancy within 12 months of trying to have a child. Technically, such couples are said to be infertile as infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse (or six months if the couple’s ages are more than 35 years old).
