IN Malaysia, there has been prompt action by the Veterinary Services Department (VSD), which has banned the importation of prairie dogs into Malaysia following the monkeypox outbreak in the United States. 

It has hardly caused a ripple in the local pet scene. According to industry insiders, keeping prairie dogs as pets is not in fashion among Malaysians. “I've been practising as a vet for 27 years, and I have only treated a prairie dog once,'' said Dr Yeoh Eng Cheong, who operates a clinic in Petaling Jaya.
