YOUR body has a host of enemies – “foreign” organisms, such as bacteria, viruses and parasites, that can cause a multitude of diseases. These organisms or pathogens may be transmitted through physical contact, exchange of body fluids, ingestion (swallowed) and so on. Many of them are prevented from taking hold in the body by physical and chemical barriers (eg the skin and sweat, respectively), and inflammatory responses (eg swelling).
If the pathogens overcome those defenses, they will generally make their way into the blood and lymphatic systems where they can be circulated throughout your body. If your immune system is weak or unable to destroy the pathogens, they will invade your organ cells and multiply there, eventually causing serious illness and may result in death.
