The story behind the story

APRIL 2003 marks the fourth year that I have been certified to be in complete remission from NPC. A year back, together with my wife, Angeline, we published a booklet on our journey with cancer entitled Face to Face with Cancer. Although it was a personal testimony, there was also information in certain chapters with regard to the early warning signs. Readers told us that this information was particularly useful and in some cases had prompted them to undergo more thorough medical checks.

I have observed people reading it in the wards and I have had many email requests for the book to be sent to various places both in Malaysia and abroad. As my oncologist tells me, it is often in the waiting room that stories are shared and hope is rekindled. In the consultation room, however, there is often a sense of anxiety when the patient meets the doctor. “What you all can tell one another as fellow patients and caregivers is often more effective than what doctors can say to you all,” he says.
