America’s king of street food has been given his own show by the news channel.
After a string of successful restaurant openings at one of the hottest hotels in Los Angeles, a stint as a culinary advisor to Jon Favreau’s food movie Chef and, of course, bragging rights to having kickstarted the phenomenal food truck movement in the US, Choi has scored another major coup in his career by bagging his own show on one of the biggest news channels in the world.
Choi has been making allusions to his latest project in a series of tweets using the hashtag #streetfood and posted a Vine video with his newest BFF Favreau in which the duo are in a kitchen laden with colorful platters of fresh cantaloupe, salad and steaks.
“Roy Choi and I shooting #streetfood for CNN #comingsoon #chefmovie,” wrote Favreau of the video.
Though the network has yet to release details, it can be safe to assume the show will deal with Choi’s claim to fame – street food.
Though he may not be a household name outside the US, diners who’ve embraced the food truck movement in Canada and even France – known as the bastion of high gastronomy – have Choi to thank for their gourmet burger, poutine or banh mi sandwich.
Choi is credited with pioneering the gourmet food truck phenomenon in the US when he launched Kogi BBQ, a mash-up of Korean-style tacos that brought LA’s Koreatown and Latin American influences together in a single bite.
