Mews Cafe offers a wide selection of tasty dishes

RELAX and unwind over delicious grub and tantalising beverages whilst soaking in the historic charms of inner city George Town at the cosy Mews Cafe in Muntri Street, Penang.

Part of the Muntri Mews boutique flashpacker hotel in the heart of the Unesco World Heritage City, it serves a modest selection of Malay-sian and international treats, all prepared with local produce and without MSG.

Guests can choose the comforts of the air-conditioned area or the tree-lined alfresco section. Regardless, its light bites such as the Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls and Chicken Satay are great for a nibble.

Highlights among the local offerings include the Nyonya Laksa Lemak, Helen’s Curry Mee and the Ikan Sambal, which combines blue rice with steamed seabass, mango salad, salted egg and emping (chips).

Western offerings include the popular Mews Chicken Pie, served with sides of salad and fries. The cafe also has weekly specials featuring mainly authentic local food such as Ipoh Koay Teow, Nasi Tomato and Gado-Gado, amongst others.

Complement it with a variety of local desserts such as Sago Gula Melaka or freshly-baked cakes.

Mews Cafe serves daily breakfast from 8am to 11.45am, with items such as Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon, Nasi Lemak, Roti Paratha, Muesli, Bread Basket, Cinnamon French Toast, Croissants, Fresh Bagels and Eggs Anyway You Like. Make it a set with fruits and coffee or tea.

Music aficionados will find the live band performances every Saturday night, from 8.30pm till closing, pleasing to their ears.

From Dec 24 to 31, the cafe is offering a three-course Christmas Set Dinner at RM60++ per person. It starts with a choice of soup or salad, followed by the main course where one can choose between Chicken Roulade and Guinness Pie (beef).

Finish off the festive indulgence with the dessert of Plum Pudding Parfait.

Mews Cafe is also available for private functions, be it birthday parties, corporate events or jolly gatherings. Menus and setups are customisable, priced at RM25nett per pax onwards, for a minimum of 10 pax.

Muntri Mews offers affordable luxury accommodation with its nine rooms which are bright and spacious, and adorned with a selection of local antiques and quirky paraphernalia.

All rooms come with en suite bathrooms, LCD TVs and spacious living areas opening out to the verandah on the upper floor or to lush private gardens on the lower floor. Free WiFi is provided for guests.

The establishment is currently having a promotion, where bookings of two nights or more made directly with it entitle guests to free fruit baskets and afternoon tea.

Muntri Mews draws upon a rich and colourful history. In the 19th century, it was used as stables and carriageworks. The carriages were kept below, whilst drivers and staff were housed above in the workers’ quarters.

It was acquired and meticulously restored to its former glory, keeping its utilitarian spirit while providing a relaxing ambience and modern comforts.

Mews Cafe is open from 8am to 11pm daily. For more information, visit or call 04-2635125 for reservations.
