THIS week, I will highlight my second discovery in Teluk Intan, Perak.
While on a night ride around this town on our folding bicycles, my group of cycling buddies and I paid a visit to Restoran Tepi Sungai located at the end of Jalan Mahkamah.
My cycling buddy Mohd Radzi Mohd Noor told me about this place which sells Udang Galah Bakar (grilled Giant River Prawns) that became famous after it was featured on television a few times.
The restaurant is located by Teluk Intan’s riverside and is easy to find as it is in the middle of town.
However, it only opens at night from 7pm to 11pm.
The lady owner of this stall wasted no time in taking our orders.
“Ah, cuba lah kami punya Udang Galah Bakar! Ini yang paling digemari,” she said (Try our grilled prawns as this is our customers’ favourite dish).
The street price of one kilogramme of Grade A udang galah is RM70 while the smaller Grade B costs RM62.
For a wholesome experience, I recommend the larger specimen as you get between 10 and 12 prawns per serving.
There are also other dishes that you can order such as the grilled stingray and squid (seasonal prices applies).
Okay, when it comes to quality and value for money, I would rate the Udang Galah Bakar 9 out of 10 on the Samo-scale.
The prawns, which are kept in an aerated holding tank, are fresh, juicy and succulent.
What I loved about the food sampled is the marinade used, a mixture of garlic, lemongrass, bird’s eye chili, salt and shallots mixed into the oil.
This gave the prawns that extra “oooomph!”.
Other than grilled prawns, there is the Udang Galah Tiga Rasa (Three-Flavour Prawns) and Udang Galah Bertepung (Battered Fried Prawns).
There is no doubt that this makan place is famous and worth the trip.
Also, there are plenty of cheap accommodation in town.
We stayed the night in Teluk Intan after a 40km off-road ride from Pekan Sabak Bernam in Selangor.
Restoran Tepi Sungai (N04 01.342 E101 01.126) is brightly lit and visitors are bound to see vehicles parked right in front of the eatery.
