Heal's unveils first fabric collection since 1970s

It collaborated with established and upcoming designers.

BRITISH design institution Heal’s is re-launching an exclusive own-brand fabrics range for the first time since the 1970s, following collaboration with a raft of established and upcoming designers.

The collection is a colourful mixture of archive material and completely new designs, created in partnership with designers such as Zandra Rhodes, who worked with the brand on previous fabric collections, and new creative talents.

“We’re putting our mark back on the fabrics industry by working with young designers as well as industry names,” explains the brand’s head of fabrics Pia Benham in a short film to introduce the new collection.

The range comprises bold patterns and strong colours, with themes ranging from tropical floral motifs to forest designs. Designers include French illustrator Malika Favre, Swedish artist Petra Borner, Danish Duo Hvass and Hannibal, artist Cressida Bell, textile designer Paul Vogel and the late wood engraver Diana Bloomfield.

Ottilie Steven created a contemporary 1940s pattern in bold hues, whilst British painter Emily Patrick’s "cloud study" design is about bringing the "external forces of nature into people’s homes".

British fashion icon Zandra Rhodes originally designed her pattern for the company in 1963, as a student at the Royal College of Art. “I was always very proud of it,” she says of the striking abstract motif featuring pinks, violets and dark turquoise hues, inspired by a David Hockney painting.

Heal’s was established in 1810 and has since become a stalwart of British interior design. The fabric collection will be in stores from Spring 2014. – AFP Relaxnews
