IN our story Monkey Business (Star2, Aug 9), we quoted from a 2011 publication, The Natural History Of The Proboscis Monkey authored by Dr Ikki Matsuda, John Sha and Henry Bernard, that there are 100 proboscis monkeys in Sarawak.
The Sarawak Forestry Department has clarified that a 1998 survey in Bako National Park found more than 200 proboscis monkeys there while a 2010 study in Kuching Wetland National Park found 60 to 80 individuals. The Samunsam Wildlife Sanctuary, Maludam National Park, Limbang mangroves and Kuala Lawas are believed to harbour more than 200 proboscis monkeys each. The species also occurs in Rajang mangroves, Klauh peatswamp and Ulu Sebuyau National Park.
