Shopping smart for baby

Babies are a bundle of joy but they also come with a hefty “price tag.” Being a first time mum, I get excited just by looking at baby stuff. I started shopping for my baby girl even before I knew her sex. With so many choices today, it is hard to control oneself when it comes to shopping for baby stuff, no matter how hard I try to resist.

Today my baby girl is four months old and I shop for her now more than ever. I just feel like buying her something every time I step into a shopping mall or supermarket.

I keep telling myself that it is best to save the money for her future - savings, education and insurance, so what I do is shop smart. Some things don't need to be expensive.

For example, if you buy imported socks from Britain, a pack of three would easily cost RM89.90 or more. I wouldn't pay so much for socks so I would buy my baby's socks at one of the hypermarkets. A pack of three costs me a mere RM4.99 or RM5.99. These socks are what I call “daily socks” which she would use daily at her nursery. This way, I wouldn't mind so much if the socks become worn out, get dirty or are lost.

There are also really cheap and safe toys sold at supermarkets. You can get a simple water-filled teether for below RM10 at Giant. Much cheaper compared with a RM30 teether.

Who says you can't shop smart?
