James “Jimbo” Flanagan was returning home from a morning trip to a dollar store, chatting with his girlfriend on his phone, when he saw something he’d never seen before.

There, near the corner of Germantown and Chelten avenues in Philadelphia, a woman was weaving yarn on a wooden frame. “Listening Loom” read the hand-drawn sign that hung behind her.
