There is something about Mud The Musical that keeps it going as a popular homegrown theatre production. It was the anchor show at Panggung Bandaraya in Kuala Lumpur, debuting in June 2014.

In fact, Mud The Musical, which tells the story of Kuala Lumpur’s origins, clocked in over 2,000 shows before the curtains came down in April last year. The musical made its historic entry into the Malaysia Book Of Records as the longest-running show in Malaysia. It did run for three years!

Mud The Musical, produced by EnfinitiVision Media, is set to return next month in a new configuration.

This time, the musical will be performed by children and young actors from Enfiniti Juniors.

The upcoming version of the musical, directed by Joanna Bessey, will open at The Platform, Menara Ken TTDI in KL on Dec 14. It looks like Mud The Musical is set to begin a new chapter after its Panggung Bandaraya run.

Bessey, who also helms Enfiniti Academy, the education arm of the Enfiniti group of companies, says her heart was touched every time she watched the musical at Panggung Bandaraya.

“It was like watching and participating in the most exciting history lesson staged by our ancestors. So, when Enfiniti Academy was set to stage its annual Youth-On-Stage musical production, I saw Mud The Musical as a perfect source of inspiration,” reveals Bessey.

'The experienced actors in the musical have given the young cast a lot of support. It's amazing to see how strong the Mud The Musical family spirit is,' says Bessey, who will direct the upcoming shows.

Enfiniti Juniors have performed professionally since 2011 in Enfiniti’s past family-friendly productions such as Seussical Jr (2013), Seussical The Broadway Musical (2014), Aladdin A Musical Comedy (2015) and earlier this year, it was also part of the cast of Ola Bola The Musical.

Bessey adds that since the original Mud musical ran for a record-breaking three years, “there is also an incredible wealth of industry knowledge which is now being shared.”

Some of the original cast and production crew are back to mentor the young actors. They will be part of the supporting cast during selected shows.

Also joining the new cast will be celebrated actress Nabila Huda as Mak Puteh and her daughter Keisha Laila.

In case you are new to the Mud tale, it is a blend of fact and fiction. It details the lives of the diverse communities that pulled in the same direction for the sake of development and unity, building Kuala Lumpur into the modern capital it is today.

Essentially, the musical is about three best friends – Mamat, Meng and Muthiah – making a living in Kuala Lumpur at the dawn of the 20th century. Their struggles and youthful antics are set against the backdrop of a booming trading centre, which was eventually engulfed by fire, water and mud.

“My team and I wanted to help give a stronger sense of belonging and identity, especially to to locals who were born and bred in this city (KL),” says Enfiniti chief dream-maker Puan Sri Tiara Jacquelina, the show’s producer.

Ultimately, it is a show for all Malaysians and beyond.

“With digital interconnectivity and globalisation, we are now so much more in touch with the rest of the world – so I feel it’s ever more important for us Malaysians never to lose touch with where we came from, and to always stay ‘anchored’ no matter where our dreams take us.”

Mud The Musical is on at The Platform, Menara KEN, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur from Dec 14-22. Tickets are RM55, RM85 and RM 105. More details: FB: enfinitiacademy.
