Two years ago in 2015, Michelle Trujillo and her gravely ill six-year-old daughter, Sophia, packed two suitcases and headed to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Maryland, United States, for groundbreaking treatment they hoped would save the young girl’s life.

“It was definitely one of the hardest things to up and leave your house and everything you know,” Michelle said. “But we had to do it.”
