It has been a customary practice amongst Asian women to stay home after giving birth and observe the month-long confinement period.

Also known medically as puerperium or the postnatal/postpartum phase, the confinement period generally lasts six to eight weeks and is a period of adjustment after delivery when the anatomical and physiological changes of pregnancy are reversed, and the body returns to its normal, pre-pregnancy state.
