Ensuring pregnant women get enough vitamin B12 could help reduce their children's risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Researchers based in Britain have found that the vitamin – principally found in meat and fish – can affect levels of a hormone called leptin, which triggers the "full" feeling after eating, and which can be linked to metabolic conditions such as diabetes.
Previous research found that mothers with low vitamin B12 levels had a higher BMI (Body Mass Index) and were at greater risk of giving birth to babies with low birth weights and high cholesterol levels. These children also showed greater insulin resistance during childhood, a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.
