This nenek loves bringing her big family together for Raya

Aminah is the matriarch of her large family, the glue that holds the sprawling clan together. - CHAN TAK KONG/The Star

In Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, the women of Aminah Adam’s family are clad in vibrant shades of green. In their baju kurung, they brought out steaming plates of rice for buka puasa. The men of the family – Atok (grandfather) and Bapa (father) – have gone to the mosque for Tarawih prayers.

Grandmother Aminah, 68, didn’t cook tonight. Originally from Johor, she now lives a few houses away from the home of that night’s cook, her daughter Maziah Mohd Zain, 53. The family’s tribe – numbering over 30 – are clustered around the Klang Valley, close to Aminah.
