In good times and in bad, sometimes it’s good to count our blessings.

The more you celebrate life, the more there is in life to celebrate. – Oprah Winfrey

As I flipped through the pages of my favourite book, I came across this wonderful quote which left me smiling all day. I often feel that in an era when everyone is constantly caught up with the ongoing events around us, we get caught up in all the stress and forget to take a moment to notice the little things which make the world a better place.

I, for one, am just 15 years old, and already I am feeling the pressure of having to excel in the activities I’m involved in. I sympathise with my friends and the teens out there, because we are all pushing ourselves to do the best we can, for ourselves, our families and the society.

Truth be told, there are some among us who feel the need to constantly be at the top of our game, so much so that we forget to value the time we spend with our family and friends. I am, of course, stating what may apply to only some of us as not everyone is in the same boat.

But really, 24 hours a day sometimes feels a little unfair. So much to accomplish in so little time. My family has always been my top priority. I am truly blessed to have an amazing mum and dad who teach me to communicate, and feel a sense of belonging when I’m with my loved ones.

They say everyday heroes don’t exist, but I beg to differ. Heroes do exist in the people we love most. I’m also lucky enough to be blessed with a younger sibling who has a heart of gold and a grandmother who is supportive of my whole family. As for my friends, I want to say that I’m thrilled to be spending my secondary school years with the lot of you.

You see, these are the little things that run through my mind at night when I ponder the wonders of life. It is true that in time to come, we all have to face various challenges, but I think it’s vital that we approach them as stepping stones as we strive to be better people. We all face good and bad times.

Most of us tend to put ourselves down and are insecure. In times like these, we should take a moment to thank God and the universe for all we have been blessed with. We are alive today. We have been given another chance to make improvements and help one another. Simple gestures do not go unnoticed, believe me. Wake up every morning and be thankful for the life you’ve been given. Live today as if it were your last and always cherish your loved ones.

I would like to say that I love you, mum and dad, more than the vast oceans. To my little brother and grandmother, I love you to the moon and back. To my friends, you do not realise how much I enjoy our jokes and precious moments together. I’ve learnt that everything around us could change in the mere blink of an eye and nothing should ever be taken for granted. The universe is listening, trust me.
