Child prodigy inches out of comfort zone

I worry for the not-so-little-anymore Jackie Evancho.

At the tender age of 10, Evancho gained worldwide attention when her impressive, operatic voice earned her second place on reality talent series America’s Got Talent.

There’s no doubt that Evancho still has the vocal chops today. But a big part of her success had to do with the fact that she was so young. Now 14, Evancho has much more to prove.

In her newest release, Awakening, Evancho starts off with what she knows best, classical favourites like The Phantom Of The Opera’s Think Of Me. The soprano is still in top form with Ennio Morricone’s Your Love but it is her rendition of contemporary tunes that prove most interesting.

Evancho succeeds even out of her comfort zone, deftly manoeuvring through Within Temptation’s Memories though her delivery of U2’s With Or Without You could have used more grit and gusto.

It remains to be seen whether the singer will suffer or break the curse of being a vocal prodigy.
