The most popular yellow cartoon character, other than the Simpsons, has been serving up jokes since 1999. Here’s a list of his brand of loopiness.

The yellow-hued, rectangular shorts-wearing invertebrate of the seas, SpongeBob SquarePants has been entertaining viewers for more than 15 years. He’s been featured on TV, in films and enough merchandise to make Barbie and Ken jealous.

Despite being such a big part of pop culture, there may be some who are not completely up to date with the best known resident of Bikini Bottom.

With the release of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water this Thursday in Malaysia, here’s an alphabetical look at SpongeBob and his friends.

Antonio Banderas: The actor plays Burger-Beard, the villain of the movie. His character isn’t animated.

Bill Fagerbakke: Before providing the voice of Patrick Star, he was best known for his role as Michael “Dauber” Dybinski on Coach.

Clancy Brown: Mr Krabs’ voice is provided by the veteran voice actor.

Date: The first episode of SpongeBob SquarePants aired on May 1, 1999.

Emmy Awards: SpongeBob SquarePants has been nominated for eight Primetime Emmy Awards. No wins. But it does have two Daytime Emmys.

Fungi: In honour of Mr SquarePants, fungi discovered in 2011 is called Spongiforma Squarepantsii.

Guest voices: Among those who have provided a voice for a character on the series are: Johnny Depp, Andy Samberg, Pat Morita, Mark Hamill, Andrea Martin, Gene Simmons, Ricky Gervais and Dennis Quaid.

H: This is the middle initial of Mr Krabs; Eugene to his friends.

Invicibubble: The superhero that SpongeBob becomes in the new feature film.

Jill Talley: SpongeBob actor Tom Kenny is married to Talley, the voice of Plankton’s wife, Karen.

Krabby Patty: If you think the recipe for the secret sauce at McDonald’s is well guarded, try to get your hands on what goes into this delicacy that SpongeBob makes.

Along with onions, pickles and undersea cheese, the burger comes with its own secret sauce. The Jelly Patty didn’t prove to be as popular.

(However, recent um, "research" has revealed that the secret formula for the Krabby Patty has been online this whole time! Check it out.)

Long life: It might seem weird, as indicated in the 2004 SpongeBob movie, that the loyal worker has been named Employee of the Month for 374 consecutive months. That would make him more than 43 years old in the new movie. No problem. Sponges can live to be 500.

Merchandising: Few cartoon characters can keep up with the number of items featuring SpongeBob’s face, including stuffed animals, hats and books. One of the strangest is the SpongeBob Digital Thermometer.

Noteworthy: In case you want to sing along with the SpongeBob theme song generally perfromed by Painty the Pirate, here are the words:

Painty: Are you ready, kids?

Kids: Aye-aye, Captain.

Painty: I can’t hear you!

Kids: Aye-aye, Captain!

Painty: Oh...... Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

Kids: SpongeBob SquarePants!

Painty: Absorbent and yellow and porous is he.

Kids: SpongeBob SquarePants!

Painty: If nautical nonsense be something you wish...

Kids: SpongeBob SquarePants!

Painty: Then drop on the deck and flop like a fish!

Kids: SpongeBob SquarePants!

Painty: Ready?

Painty and Kids: SpongeBob SquarePants! SpongeBob SquarePants! SpongeBob SquarePants!

Painty: SpongeBoooob...SquarePaaaaaaants! A-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Octopus: Although the character voiced by Rodger Bumpass is called Squidward, he’s really an octopus.

Pineapple: SpongeBob and his pet, Gary, live in a house made from the fruit that is located at 124 Conch St. One of the drawbacks of living in a pineapple is that the house has been destroyed at least 20 times, including catching on fire (not an easy task under water).

Quanteus Johnson: Plays the Tiki Hut Man in the new movie. (You try to find a better Q word).

Rodger Bumpass: Veteran voice actor who is the voice of Squidward Tentacles.

Stephen Hillenburg: Ever wonder why the show isn’t BeeBob SquarePants or AntelopeBob SquarePants? That’s because the creator is a cartoonist and a marine biologist. He also worked as a cook at a fast food restaurant, which explains SpongeBob’s career choice.

Tom Kenny: The Syracuse native has a long list of voice work to his credit, including Rocko’s Modern Life and CatDog. Not only is he the voice of SpongeBob and Gary, he’s the voice behind the French Narrator and Patchy the Pirate.

Underwater home: SpongeBob and the gang live in Bikini Bottom. It’s located in the Pacific Ocean below Bikini Atoll. That’s not to be confused with No Bikini Atoll from Beany And Cecil fame.

Video: Episodes of SpongeBob’s television show have been available on VHS and DVD for years. The most recent release has one of the longest names in video history: SpongeBob SquarePants Triple Feature: 10 Happiest Moments, Heroes Of Bikini Bottom & Legends Of Bikini Bottom.

Worldwide: The SpongeBob TV show is translated into 42 languages. He’s “Bob Esponja” in Spanish and “SpongeBob Kanciastoporty” in Polish.

X-Ray: SpongeBob once turned up in a child’s X-ray in Saudi Arabia.

YouTube: You can see the official trailer for the new movie on YouTube.

Zoology: Many things about SpongeBob and his friends may seem fishy, but the only main character who is a fish is Mrs Puff. She’s a blowfish. – The Fresno Bee/Tribune News Service
