Night of stars

The Zee Cine Awards 2007 at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, had the crowd in a frenzy.

Not too torn up: Although Preity Zinta did not receive anyaward that night,

Bollywood is renowned for its glamour and glitter. While colourful costumes, extensive musical numbers and scenic backgrounds are all part of the Bollywood film culture, we all know that what keeps audiences enthralled are the actors themselves.

The recent Zee Cine Awards 2007, held at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, proved just that. Complete madness seemed to have taken over the crowd gathered at the red carpet area as stars arrived for the event.

Wave those fans – she’s just too hot: After being hailed as the queen of Bollywood, Aishwarya Rai is preparing to conquer the Chinesemarket. You think?

Pushing, shoving and climbing over barriers were some of the “action scenes” at this function.

Despite the somewhat chaotic introduction to the night, which reached a climax when Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan arrived almost simultaneously, the awards itself was an enjoyable experience.

Don’t stand so close to him: Everybody wants a piece of this man. AsKaran Johar said, Shah Rukh Khan is no longer a name but a brand.

Kicking off on time, the show, hosted by Karan Johar, Saif Ali Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Urmila Matondkar, ran like clockwork and ended as scheduled.

If there was a hitch, it was that the winners could not step up for their awards as they themselves were getting ready for a performance. Shah Rukh Khan missed his big speech when he was announced Entertainer of the Year in a viewers’ poll, and Abishek Bachchan had to run out from backstage to receive his award for Best Supporting Actor.

Making waves: Newcomer Kangana Ranaut received two nominationsin the Most Promising Debut category – for Gangsterand Woh Lamhe. She received the award for Gangster.

Hosts Karan (of talk show Koffee with Karan fame), Urmila and Shilpa, made the most of the night as they cajoled the winners to sing, dance and even thank the director, to the audience’s delight.

The Zee Cine Awards also had musical skits for each best film nominee and that turned out quite hilarious.

Saif was quick enough with his retorts. And for the first time, the Zee Cine Awards introduced the Zenith Award, which was given out to the movie with the most number of awards that night. It went to two less glamorous but more significant films released last year – Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho Munnabhai.
