American pop star Taylor Swift tops the list of artistes who make Singaporeans feel happy, while Mandopop star Jay Chou tops the list of artistes who make them feel sad.

This is according to the results of an online survey of 1,502 Singaporeans by Preply, a US-based online language learning platform that connects tutors with students, on which artistes are most likely to make them feel certain emotions.

Of the respondents, 23.6% say that Swift is the artiste whose music is most likely to make fans feel happiness. She is followed by American band Maroon 5, K-pop girl group Blackpink, Chou and Singaporean Mandopop singer JJ Lin.

Chou is the artiste whose music makes them feel saddest, say 19.5% of the respondents. He is followed by Swift, Lin, Taiwanese singer Eric Chou and British singer Adele.

When it comes to eliciting feelings of anger, the music of American rock band Linkin Park tops the list with 14.1%, followed by American rapper Eminem, American metal veterans Metallica, Swift and American hip-hop star Kanye West.

Swift also tops the list of artistes whose music makes the respondents feel love with 25.9%, followed by British singer Ed Sheeran, American singer Bruno Mars, Chou and Lin.

According to Preply, which was founded in 2012, the survey was conducted in June and included “a diverse demographic to ensure a representative sample of the population”.

In March, Swift, currently the biggest pop star in the world, drew more than 300,000 fans during her six sold-out shows in Singapore at the National Stadium. She had previously performed at the much smaller Singapore Indoor Stadium in 2011, 2014 and 2015.

In 2023, she was the most-streamed music act among local Spotify users, and took three spots on the top albums list with Midnights (2022) at No. 1, Lover (2019) at No. 3 and 1989 (2014) at No. 5. She was also the top artiste among Spotify users worldwide.

On Apple Music, which hailed her 2023’s Artiste of the Year, subscribers listened to her more than any other musician. Two of her tunes were among the Top 10 songs streamed by Singaporean users: Anti-Hero (2022) at No. 3 and Cruel Summer (2019) at No. 6.

Chou, the third most-streamed artiste among local Spotify users, will perform sold-out shows at the National Stadium on Oct 11 to 13. The concerts are part of his Carnival World Tour. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
