Singer Elton John and his husband David Furnish on July 9 announced grants of US$25mil (RM107mil) to projects combating the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Eastern Europe and Central Asia – the only region where new infections are rising rapidly as rates plummet worldwide.

About 1.7 million people in the region, who form about 4% of the global total of 38 million, are HIV-positive, United Nations data shows.
