In a statement today, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo announced the appointment of Datuk Hans Isaac as the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia's (Finas) new chairman.

He will be serving this position for two years from April 8 onward. He takes over from Datuk Samsuni Mohd Nor, who was the Finas acting chairman for four months.

Hans' appointment comes a month after director-actor Ahmad Idham was named as Finas new CEO.

Hans who got his big break in the 1995 film, Ringgit Kasorrga. He is also active in stage productions. The most recent was in Baik Punya Concert 4D, where the proceeds from the ticket sales went to Yayasan Chow Kit.

In the past, the 47-year-old actor/producer/director has been vocal on a number of issues including cyberbullying and fake news.

In a 2003 interview, Hans recalled how he got into showbiz: "I was shooting a commercial with Deanna Yusoff who was going to act in Ringgit Kasorrga. Deanna suggested I audition and I was like, 'No-lah. Act, ah?'

"I never even knew there was a film industry in Malaysia at that time. I used to watch cartoons or play outside as a kid, not watch local fare. I was holding onto the railing refusing to audition! I nearly peed in my pants when I saw (director) Shuhaimi Baba. I was that scared. A week later they asked me to come back for another casting call but this time for the lead. I was like, 'The what?!'“

With both the top positions in Finas filled with experienced players in the Malaysian film industry, it should mark a fresh beginning for the corporation and the industry.
