Jared Padalecki (left) and Jensen Ackles star in Supernatural

The Winchester brothers have - literally - gone to hell and back throughout Supernatural's 14-season run. On March 23, cast members Jared Padelecki, Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins announced it's time for the characters to take a well-earned break.

"Though we are very excited about moving into our 15th season, it will be our last," Ackles said in a video posted on all three of the actors' social media platforms.

Supernatural, which first premiered in 2005, sees Sam (Padelecki) and Dean (Ackles) taking on supernatural creatures big and small while they uncover the truth behind their mother's mysterious death.

The series, currently at the tail end of its 14th season, is expected to roll out its 15th season this October while the finale episode will air next year.

However, fans of Supernatural, may not need to say farewell for good just yet. Ackles' caption accompanying the video on Instagram contained a cryptic message. "Though nothing ever really ends in Supernatural...does it?"Â

he writes before adding a winking face emoji.

The idea that the characters of the show could live on through a spin-off is not too far-fetched as there were plans for one back in 2014. Titled Supernatural: Bloodlines, the spin-off was set in Chicago and centred on the battle between hunters and monsters. A special episode on Supernatural Season Nine was even crafted to serve as a backdoor pilot for the spin-off. Unfortunately, Bloodlines never got picked up.

So who knows?
