The Ghost Bride

American streaming giant Netflix has recruited Malaysian filmmakers Quek Shio Chuan and Ho Yuhang to direct its upcoming Mandarin original series, The Ghost Bride.

The six-episode series, based on the novel of the same name by Malaysia-born author Yangsze Choo, explores the traditional practice of ghost marriages.

Set in 1890s Colonial Malacca, protagonist Li Lan receives a marriage proposal from the affluent Lim family. If Li Lan agrees to become a “ghost bride” to their recently deceased son, her family will be saved from a lifetime of debt. But shortly after the wedding, she finds herself haunted by the afterworld, besides being thrown in the middle of a murder mystery.

Quek is best known for directing last year’s award-winning Guang – a film about a young man with autism – as well as a slew of memorable Hari Raya ads. Meanwhile, Ho is an established director with critically-acclaimed works like 2009’s At The End Of The Daybreak and 2017’s Mrs K.

American-Taiwanese TV writer Kai Yu Wu (Hannibal and The Flash) will join Quek and Ho as the show’s head writer.

The cast comprises Taiwan’s Wu Kang Jen and Huang Peijia, Canadian-Chinese actor Ludi Lin and Malaysian musical and theatre artist Tian Tze Kuang.
