Crazy Rich Asians

August is looking like a good month for Asian movies, with sequels to blockbuster hits such as Munafik 2 (Aug 30), Europe Raiders (Aug 9), Along With The Gods: The Last 49 Days (Aug 23), L Storm (Aug 23), err, Hantu Kak Limah (Aug 9), and a Donnie Yen movie, Big Brother (Aug 16) to look forward to.

And then there’s a certain movie starring two Malaysians playing super rich Singaporeans – Crazy Rich Asians (Aug 22).

Despite no major superhero movie to mess up the schedule, Hollywood’s mid-range blockbusters are also coming out to play.

Today, there’s Mila Kunis’ The Spy Who Dumped Me and The First Purge (reviewed here), the prequel to horror franchise The Purge, and the following weeks will see with a number of over-the-top action movies like The Meg (Aug 9) and The Equalizer 2 (Aug 30).

Europe Raiders (Aug 9)

Cast: Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Kris Wu, Tiffany Tang

Director: Jingle Ma

This sequel to Tokyo Raiders (2000) and Seoul Raiders (2006) sees the top two bounty hunters in the business, Lin Zaifeng and Wang Chaoying, go after a weapon of mass destruction called the “Hand Of God”.

Why you should watch it:

Frankly speaking, there’s no movie with Tony Leung Chiu Wai in it that we wouldn’t watch, especially one where he plays a suave, stylish bounty hunter with moves to match his wit.

The Meg (Aug 9)

Cast: Jason Statham, Jessica McNamee, Li Bingbing

Director: Jon Turteltaub

The crew aboard a deep-sea submersible, which is part of an international undersea observation programme, is trapped inside it when it gets attacked by a creature previously thought to be extinct – a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. Expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor will have to save the crew but what no one knows is he has faced the creature years before. Now he will have to confront his fears to save everyone trapped below.

Why you should watch it:

Hey, it’s Jason Statham versus a giant prehistoric shark that makes Jaws look like an ikan bilis. Why WOULDN’T you want to watch this?

Disney’s Christopher Robin (Aug 16)

Cast: Ewan McGregor, Hayley Atwell, Bronte Carmichael, Mark Gatiss

Director: Marc Forster

A grown-up Christopher Robin, now a working-class family man, runs into some troubled times with his job, but an encounter with childhood friend Winnie-the-Pooh leads to him rediscovering the joys of life once again.

Why you should watch it:

We have a soft spot for Winnie-the-Pooh and his pals, so this would be a nice trip down nostalgia lane. We’re not sure if we’ll ever be able to get used to seeing Pooh in live-action, but we still want a plush toy of him.

Crazy Rich Asians (Aug 22)

Cast: Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh

Director: Jon M. Chu

Rachel Chu follows her Singaporean boyfriend Nick to his hometown to attend his best friend’s wedding, only to discover that he comes from a super rich family in Singapore, and is considered one of the most eligible bachelors in the country. Now, she not only needs to fend off his jealous suitors, but also try to get into the good books of his disapproving mother.

Why you should watch it:

Hey, how often do you get to watch a blockbuster Hollywood movie with not one, but TWO Malaysians in the leading roles? Henry Golding and Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh may be playing Singaporeans, but we’re still going to be shouting “Malaysia Boleh!” in the cinemas. Hey, if we can’t be crazy rich Asians, we can at least be crazy Asians, right?

Along With The Gods: The Last 49 Days (Aug 23)

Cast: Ha Jung-woo, Ju Ji-hoon, Kim Hyang-gi, Ma Dong-seok

Director: Kim Yong-hwa

In this follow-up to 2017’s Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds, the grim reapers Gang-rim (Ha Jung-woo), Haewonmak (Ju Ji-hoon) and Lee Deok-choon (Kim Hyang-gi) guide their 49th soul Kim Soo-hong (Kim Dong-wook) through to the 49th trail of the underworld, so that all four of them can be reincarnated. Up in the living world, the Household God (Ma Dong-seok) helps them to recover the grim reapers’ memories from 1,000 years ago.

Why you should watch it:

Essentially one movie filmed in two parts, Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds is the second most watched movie in South Korean history, and this one looks set to beat that record as well. Remember to bring tissues.

Big Brother (Aug 16)

Cast: Donnie Yen, Ray Lui, Joe Chen, Kang Yu

Director: Kan Jia Wei

A seemingly mild-mannered, high school teacher with who may seem ordinary but in actuality has a particular set of skills. When he goes in search of his missing student, he gets into trouble with several mixed martial arts fighters. His dark past soon comes back to haunt him.

Why you should watch it:

It feels like forever since the last Donnie Yen movie, and this is the first of four, yes four!, movies the martial arts star will be starring in over the next year (which also includes Ip Man 4!). This looks like a fun, uplifting, inspiring movie with a lot of kung fu fighting. We’re so there.

Munafik 2 (Aug 30)

Cast: Syamsul Yusof, Maya Karin, Fizz Fairuz, Mawi, Fauzi Nawawi, Nasir Bilal Khan

Director: Syamsul Yusof

In the sequel to 2016’s Munafik, Syamsul Yusof reprises his role as Ustaz Adam, and this time, he goes up against a man with misguided religious teachings and has to rescue a poor single mother from an evil spirit.

Why you should watch it:

The trailer looks scary as hell, and frankly, it’s about time we’ve got another Malaysian horror movie that is actually scary.

The Equalizer 2 (Aug 30)

Cast: Denzel Washington, Ashton Sanders

Director: Antoine Fuqua

Now retired from the life of an assassin, Robert McCall works as a Lyft driver and helps the less fortunate with the help from his friend, Susan Plummer. But when Susan is found dead one day, Robert goes back to his equalising ways, armed with his trusty calculator. Err, we mean gun.

Why you should watch it:

For two hours of madcap, brutal action from one of the best actors in the business, Denzel Washington.
