Malaysian heist drama Fly By Night has just been announced as one of the recipients of the ACF 2018 Post-Production Fund of the Busan International Film Festival’s (BIFF) Asian Cinema Fund (ACF).
The ACF with its 900 million won (RM3.24mil) allocation is a funding initiative that supports the production of Asian independent films in four categories: Production Support Fund, Script Development Fund, Post-Production Fund and Asian Network of Documentary (AND) Fund.
This year, 24 projects were selected from the 365 submissions, and Fly By Night (working title) is one of six winners of this year’s post-production grant, which offers support for feature debut projects by new directors from the region.
This means that the film will be receiving in-kind support which includes digital intermediate (DI), sound mixing, English subtitles spotting, and digital cinema package (DCP) from quality post-production studios in South Korea.
Scripted by Dain Said, Ivan Yeo and Frederick Bailey and produced by Perin Petrus and Leonard Tee, Fly By Night will be the feature film directorial debut of Zahir Omar, with cinematography by Low Keong, who has worked with on films by Yasmin Ahmad.
Malaysian actors set to star in the movie include Sunny Pang (Headshot), Jack Tan (Shuttle Life), Fabian Loo (Think Big Big) and Bront Palarae (Pengabdi Setan). The film tells the story of a group of cabbies in their attempt to pay off their debts have to resort to crime.
In February, Fly By Night was picked up for distribution by Hong Kong’s Good Move Media, which has promoted other Malaysian films like Edmund Yeo’s Aqerat (2017) and Saw Teong Hin’s You Mean The World To Me (2017).
