Skyscraper (2018)

Just when you think the Marvel Cinematic Universe was done for the year, BAM! Another movie comes out. Oh well, at least Ant-Man And The Wasp (out today) offers some respite from the depressing ending of Avengers: Infinity War.

Elsewhere, we’ve got sequels galore lined-up this month, with Mamma Mia 2, Escape Plan 2, Eiffel I’m In Love 2, Hotel Transylvania 3 and Mission Impossible 6 (yes, SIX) all hitting cinemas in July. It’s enough to make you jump off a building... oh wait, that’s exactly what Dwayne Johnson does in Skyscraper...

Ant-Man And The Wasp (now showing)

Director: Peyton Reed

Cast: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena, Walton Goggins, Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Douglas

In the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, Scott Lang is under house arrest. Just as he is closed to being free, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym recruit him for an urgent mission – to save Janet Van Dyne, Hank’s wife and Hope’s mother, from the quantum realm.

Why you should watch it:

From our review: "The first Ant-Man was a quirky breath of fresh air in the increasingly overblown (but still hugely entertaining) Marvel Cinematic Universe, and likewise, this movie offers a light-hearted respite from the sombreness that had enveloped the MCU after the devastating universe-ending finale of Infinity War".

Eiffel I’m In Love 2 (July 5)

Cast: Shandy Aulia, Samuel Rizal, Helmy Yahya

Director: Rizal Mantovani

Set 14 years after the events of Eiffel I’m In Love, the now grown-up Tita and Adit are involved in a long distance relationship, and facing new problems every day. With her close friends all happiy married, Tita is close to giving up on the relationship, as Adit still hasn’t proposed to her.

Why you should watch it:

It’s been 15 years since the hit teen romance Eiffel I’m In Love 2 was released. IT should be interesting to see if stars Samuel Rizal and Shandy Aulia can maintain the chemistry led to the first movie becoming such a hit in Indonesia.

Escape Plan 2: Hades (July 12)

Director: Steven C. Miller

Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Dave Bautista, Jaime King, 50 Cent, Jesse Metcalfe, Wes Chatham

Security specialist and expert prison breaker Ray Breslin’s most trusted operative is kidnapped, and put in an elaborate prison called Hades. So what does he do? Infiltrate this prison and break him out, of course.

Why you should watch it:

No Arnold? No problem. Dave Bautista should be able to keep the action going even if Sylvestor Stallone slows down (which he doesn’t seem to be). Plus we love an elaborate prison break.

Skyscraper (July 12)

Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber

Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Neve Campbell, Chin Han, Roland Moller, Pablo Schreiber, Byron Mann, Noah Taylor

Former FBI agent and amputee Will Sawyer is in charge of security at the tallest and supposedly safest skyscraper in Hong Kong. When the building is attacked by terrorists, Sawyer is not only framed for the attacks, but he also has to find a way to save his family from the building.

Why you should watch it:

Yes, it’s essentially Dwayne Johnson doing a Die Hard, but frankly speaking, we’d watch Dwayne Johnson in anything, even if it’s a remake of Mamma Mia. Speaking of which...

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (July 19)

Director: Ol Parker

Cast: Meryl Streep, Lily James, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Dominic Cooper, Cher

Sat ten years after the first film, Sophie is now pregnant with Sky’s child and running her mother Donna’s villa on the Greek island of Kalokairi. Looking for guidance on how to be a mother, she learns more about Donna’s past, including how she met each one of Sophie’s three dads.

Why you should watch it:

Do you love ABBA’s music? Have you always wanted to know how Sophie ended up with three dads? Then say gimme gimme gimme and go spend some money, money, money to watch this movie, movie, movie.

The Big Day (July 12)

Cast: Amber An, Desmond Tan, Richard Low, Liu Ling Ling

Director: Lee Thean-Jeen

A diving instructor is planning a small-scale wedding with his fiance, but her future in-laws want a much bigger ceremony, which causes rifts between the soon-to-be wed couple.

Why you should watch it:

The synopsis for this Singaporean rom-com makes it sound like a romance flick, but the trailer is more of a slapstick comedy that makes fun of all the common tropes associated with a typical Chinese wedding in Singapore (and Malaysia, for that matter). Should be a nice fun watch.

Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation (July 19)

Director: Genndy Tartakovsky

Voice Cast: Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Kevin James, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, Sadie Sandler, Molly Shannon, Fran Drescher, Mel Brooks

Dracula is stressed out from running his hotel, and needs a vacation from running everyone else’s vacation. So, off he, Mavis, Johnny, and the rest of the monster gang go for a holiday on a luxury Monster Cruise Ship. Yes, they’ve

Why you should watch it:

Sure, they’ve basically taken the same premise of all the other movies and moved it from a hotel in Transylvania to a hotel on water, but there’s a new twist to the whole plot with Dracula hooking up with the ship’s captain, who also happens to be a decendant of vampire hunter Van Helsing. Will she steal his heart or stake it? Either way, there will be blood... or not. Hey, this is a family movie after all.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (July 26)

Director: Christopher McQuarrie

Cast: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Michelle Monaghan, Alec Baldwin, Sean Harris, Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett

When an IMF mission ends badly, the world is faced with dire consequences. As Ethan Hunt takes it upon himself to fulfill his original briefing, the CIA begins to question his loyalty and his motives. Hunt finds himself in a race against time, hunted by assassins and former allies while trying to prevent a global catastrophe.

Why you should watch it:

Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hawke going rogue (again) after another botched IMF mission, jumps off buildings, crashes cars, and hangs on to really tall cliffs (again). So, what else is new? Oh well, at least it’s gonna be one heck of a ride.
