Kelly Clarkson remembers the moment that changed her life – the day she auditioned for American Idol in 2002.

Clarkson, 35, tells Rolling Stone: “Honestly, my place had just burned down in (Los Angeles, California),

I had lived in my car for three days, and I literally had made that outfit I was wearing. I think the only reason I was probably confident is I had nothing to lose (laughs).”

She not only won the competition, she become one of the most successful artistes in Idol history, with eight full-length studio recordings and over 25 million albums sold to date.

Now 16 years later, the tables have turned for the three-time Grammy winner as she serves – for the first time alongside Adam Levine, Alicia Keys and Blake Shelton – as a coach for another singing competition on television, The Voice (Season 14).

“I’m looking for believability like a storyteller. I like someone soulful. I think a lot of people try to pay attention to being so technically perfect and I used to do that when I first started, and it’s annoying. It doesn’t sound real, you know? So I’m looking for real storytellers,” she shares with King 5.

But as they say, with great power comes great responsibility. Clarkson says she hates deciding on the fate of the contestants.

“Oh my gosh, making cuts are the worst. When you have to choose someone on your team over someone else on your team – it’s the worst experience ever. And I’ve experienced a lot of horrible things in the industry and that actually tops it ...

"I’ve been them and you feel like they feel it’s over, you know? ... I hate it. I’m very much looking forward to America voting and y’all getting the guilt.”

'The Voice' Season 14 airs every Tuesday and Wednesday at 2pm on Foxlife (Astro Ch 711).
