'Crazy Rich Asians' is scheduled to open in cinemas nationwide on Aug 16.

It wasn’t too long ago when Malaysia and Singapore were the shooting locations for Crazy Rich Asians, a romantic comedy based on the bestselling novel by Kevin Kwan.

The film boasts quite a number of Malaysians including Henry Golding and Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh. Directed by Jon M. Chu (Now You See Me 2), it follows American-born Rachel Chu (Constance Wu from TV comedy Fresh Off The Boat) arriving in Singapore with her boyfriend Nick Young (Golding) to attend his best friend’s wedding.

Naively, Rachel thought Nick was a man of simple means – even though all the evidence, like the fact she flew to Singapore first class, shows otherwise.

Not surprising to anyone else but her, Nick is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. To make matters worse, her possible future mother-in-law (Yeoh) is not too keen on Rachel.

We would say “Alamak!” at this point but since the book used the word wrongly every time, we won’t bother.
