Director Guillermo del Toro’s latest flick tops the Critics’ Choice Awards nomination list with 14 nods.
That is quite a recognition alright. It’s ultimately a love story, but within its fairy tale setting, the film also looks at tolerance of others who are not exactly “normal”.
Set against the backdrop of the Cold War era in the United States circa 1962, we find a lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) who works in a high-security government laboratory. Her life changes forever when she discovers a classified experiment in the form of a creature.
Collider.com, in its review, highlighted the film’s look and production design, as well as the impeccable casting.
The review states: “As difficult a feat The Shape Of Water is to pull off, I’d say the same thing back to del Toro. It helps that the ending is so resplendent. You’ll leave the theatre with a lighter air in your lungs. It’s delicate and it’s timely. Love comes in many shapes. And it’s not a choice.”
Co-starring Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon and Richard Jenkins.
