September is here and with it, the new TV season and a slight decline in major film releases.

There’s still some gold to be found though (literally, in the case of Renegades), with the return of the Kingsman in Kingsman: The Golden Circle (hey, there’s gold here too), the second Lego-related movie of the year, The Lego Ninjago Movie (Le-gold, anyone?), and one of the most anticipated horror movies of the year, It.

Oh, and there’s also a pair of action movies starring veteran Hong Kong martial artistes – Mrs K, the critically-acclaimed film by Malaysian director Ho Yuhang starring Kara Wai; and The Foreigner, starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan.

Renegades (Sept 1)

Cast: Sullivan Stapleton, JK Simmons, Charlie Bewley

Director: Steven Quale

A group of rebellious Navy SEALs find out that there is a cache of gold hidden inside a lake in war-torn Serbia and plot to retrieve it.

Why You Should Watch It

It’s got J.K. Simmons being his usual shouty self and a decent sounding wartime heist. But what’s really got us interested is that tank chase through Sarajevo. Because if there’s anything we love more than a good car chase, it’s a good tank chase.

Logan Lucky (Sept 7)

Cast: Daniel Craig, Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Katherine Waterston

Director: Steven Soderbergh

Brothers Jimmy and Clyde Logan are down on their luck – Jimmy just got laid off from his blue-collar job, and Clyde’s a struggling bartender who lost his arm at war. Together, they plan to pull of a major heist with the help of a convicted safecracker named Joe Bang.

Why You Should Watch It

We know Steven Soderbergh does great heist movies, and this one looks like one of the wackiest ones yet. The reviews have been pretty good so far, and hey, there’s James Bond as a possibly insane safecracker who probably shakes AND stirs people up all the time.

It (Sept 7)

Cast: Bill Skarsgård, Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff

Director: Andres Muschietti

Twenty-seven years ago, children started disappearing from the town of Derry, and seven children from the “Loser’s Club” discover that it’s the doing of an evil clown called Pennywise. Today, as children start to disappear from their hometown again, they get together again to stop It once and for all.

Why You Should Watch It

Who knew red balloons and clowns could be so scary? With the trailer alone giving us the creeps, the movie could challenge Annabelle: Creation for the title of 2017’s scariest movie.

Mrs K (Sept 7)

Cast: Kara Wai, Simon Yam, Wu Bai, and Faizal Hussein.

Director: Ho Yuhang

Mrs K is just an ordinary housewife with an ordinary life. But she harbours a dark secret from her past, and one day, that past catches up to her when her daughter gets kidnapped by some of her former enemies.

Why You Should Watch It

It’s got martial arts legend and award-winning actress Kara Wai in a Taken-esque role, it’s got a Tarantino-like vibe to it, it’s been getting great reviews all over the world, and best of all, it’s directed by a Malaysian!

American Assassin (Sept 14)

Cast: Dylan O’Brien, Michael Keaton, Taylor Kitsch

Director: Michael Cuesta

After losing his girlfriend in a terrorist attack, Mitch Rapp signs up to become a CIA black ops agent trained by Cold War veteran Stan Hurley. Together, they are assigned to investigate a wave of attacks on both military and civilian targets.

Why You Should Watch It

Any movie with Michael Keaton in it is always worth watching. And judging from the trailer, you can expect lots of stylishly-choreographed action sequences and some intense spy thrills as well.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Sept 21)

Cast: Taron Egerton, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Channing Tatum

Director: Matthew Vaughn

The Kingsman’s headquarters has been destroyed, and Eggsy has to team-up with the secret organisation’s counterparts in the United States – Statesman – to stop a ruthless enemy who is holding the world hostage.

Why You Should Watch It

The first Kingsman movie was a rip-roaring rollercoaster ride of a movie that was violent, funny, and oh so entertaining. With Colin Firth’s character coming back from the dead and the addition of Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges as members of Statesman, this promises to be an even wilder ride.

The Lego Ninjago Movie (Sept 21)

Cast: Dave Franco, Michael Pena, Fred Armisen, Kumail Nanjiani, Zach Woods, Abbi Jacobson, Jackie Chan, Justin Theroux, Olivia Munn

Director: Charlie Bean

Welcome to Ninjago, a place where Lego ninjas go. Six young ninjas have been trained to defend the island from monsters. One of them, Lloyd, aka the Green Ninja, also happens to be the son of evil warlord Garmadon, who wants to conquer the world, brick by brick. Awkward family reunions ahead!

Why You Should Watch It

It’s ninjas, and Lego! What could go wrong? Ninjago may be a relatively new name to those not familiar with Lego brand, but if The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie have proved anything, it’s that everything about Lego movies is awesome.

The Foreigner (Sept 21)

Cast: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan, Liu Tao, Katie Leung

Director: Martin Campbell

After losing his daughter to a bombing by Irish terrorists, an elderly restaurant owner (who also happens to be a former Special Forces agent) goes on a quest to track down the people responsible for the bombing, and make them pay.

Why You Should Watch It

What is it with veteran Hong Kong martial arts actors and Taken-esque roles this month? Chan looks really like he means business in the trailer though. After that whole Kungfu Yoga farce earlier this year, we’re looking forward to seeing a more menacing Chan in action this time around.
